Hindcast

Privacy Policy

Hindcast reconstructs a workday from the applications and windows you work in, so that you can review it and bill it. It is built so that the record it makes does not leave your Mac by itself: there is no account, no sync, no analytics and no advertising.

This policy is published by Guo Taihang, an individual developer in China, who makes and sells Hindcast and is responsible for the personal information described below.

What is kept on this Mac

Hindcast stores everything it knows in its own database on your Mac:

  • applications you use;
  • window and document titles;
  • browser domain, if you allow it;
  • when each of those changed;
  • the clients, projects, rates and rounding you enter;
  • the work you review, and the timesheets you export.

Nothing in that list is uploaded anywhere.

What is never recorded

  • screen contents;
  • keystrokes;
  • full web addresses or page contents.

Hindcast takes no screenshots, does not read the clipboard, and contains no analytics, no tracker and no third-party SDK.

What leaves this Mac

Two kinds of request leave the Mac, and neither carries anything about what you did.

  • License activation and checks. Activating sends your license key, an anonymous installation id the app generated for this Mac, and the version of the app — three fields and no others. The periodic check sends a hash of the key rather than the key itself. Every answer the app acts on is signed, and the app checks the signature against a key built into it. The app asks at most once every 30 days, and keeps working for 30 days without a network.
  • Update checks. These ask our server for the newest version, and carry the version of the app that is asking.

Our web host keeps ordinary request logs for the download and the update feed, as any web server does.

What we keep about a purchase

Buying a licence is the one time we hold anything about you, and none of it is about your work.

  • From Paddle, when you buy: your email address, the name you gave at checkout, and Paddle’s id for the transaction. Card and payment details, and the billing address you give, stay with Paddle — it is the merchant of record for every purchase, and its handling of them is covered by Paddle’s own privacy policy, which the checkout links to.
  • What our licence service creates: your licence key and a hash of it, Paddle’s id for the transaction, and — once you activate the app — an anonymous installation id for that Mac, an activation id for it, and the version of the app that checked in.

An installation id is a random value the app generates once and keeps in your Keychain. It is not a hardware id, not a serial number and not your Mac’s name. The licence service’s database keeps no IP address and no record of what you do in the app. Cloudflare, which runs the service, keeps a short operational log of requests to it, which can include the IP address a request came from, for 7 days; we use it only to diagnose faults.

We use this only to issue, deliver and check your licence, and to answer you when you write to support. It is stored by our licence service on Cloudflare, and your key is emailed to you through Cloudflare Email Service. Both act only on our instructions. Cloudflare runs a global network, so this information may be processed outside the country where you live, including outside China and outside the European Union.

We keep it for as long as the licence exists. You can ask to see it, correct it, receive a copy of it, or have it deleted, by writing to [email protected]; we answer within 15 working days. Deleting it means the licence key can no longer be activated, and Paddle keeps its own record of the sale as the law requires of it.

Your controls

  • Keep history — Settings ▸ Privacy & Data sets how long activity is kept: until deleted, or 30, 90 or 365 days.
  • Export All Data… — writes everything Hindcast holds into a file you choose. It works whether or not a license is active.
  • Delete History… — deletes activity for a date range you choose.
  • Delete All Activity Data… — deletes everything, and cannot be undone.
  • Deactivate This Mac… — releases this Mac’s activation, so the license can be used on another Mac.
